Escultura Alianza de Facundo Fierro en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

"Alianza" sculpture, by Facundo Fierro, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1999)

At the roundabout where Avenida Juan XXIII and Avenida Marítima intersect in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a fifteen-meter-tall sculpture made of enameled Corten steel has stood since 1999: Alianza, by Facundo Fierro.

It is one of the artist's largest-scale pieces in a public space: an abstract organic form crafted in Corten steel—a material Fierro has used recurrently in his monumental sculpture—and finished with enamel, an unusual decision for this type of work that accentuates the contrast between the oxidized texture of the metal and the applied color.

The sculpture occupies one of the main entrances to the Gran Canarian capital, on the axis that connects the port and the coastline with the city center, a location that multiplies its daily visibility to traffic and pedestrians crossing the roundabout.

The oldest photographic record documenting the work on the internet dates back to 2008 (photograph by Ana María Quesada), although the work itself is dated 1999, coinciding with a period of intense activity by Fierro in the Canarian public space that includes pieces such as Dunas, in Maspalomas, or Flora, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Alianza is part of a body of sculptural work in which Fierro resorts to the language of abstract forms in large dimensions to, as has been written about his work, "capture or envelop space" and involve the viewer in the surrounding landscape.
